“Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement. The bigger your goals and the clearer they are, the more excited you become about achieving them. The more you think about your goals, the greater becomes your inner drive and desire to accomplish them.”

― Brian Tracy

With 2021 coming to an end, it seems fitting to talk about the immense value that setting goals brings to our professional and personal lives.

As professionals we are constantly hearing about different methods for setting measurable and achievable goals, but I think sometimes we forget about why goal setting is so important.

At its most basic level, goal setting is a foundation for leadership, a motivational tool, and a personal compass.

But the benefits don’t stop there, and today I would like to remind you of the tangible and intangible advantages you reap by setting goals in your personal and professional life.

The Power Of Goal Setting

Goal-setting creates a self-reinforcing process that can lead to amazing improvements and accomplishments in your life:

Focus ⇒ Accomplishment ⇒ Satisfaction ⇒ Motivation ⇒ Productivity

Let’s talk about each part of the process:

1. Goals Give Your Life Focus And Direction

When you write down your goals, it helps you map out your plans and focus on how to best accomplish them. You become filled with purpose because you are working to achieve concrete objectives.

Instead of spending valuable time spinning your wheels on random projects, you have focus and direction and spend your time wisely and efficiently.

2. Goals Turn Intimidating Projects Into Achievable Ones

Writing down your goals and breaking them up into smaller steps helps you believe that you can accomplish them no matter how big or intimidating they may seem.

When you see small, manageable steps, your overwhelming goal suddenly feels achievable, your motivation builds as you accomplish each task, and your confidence soars!

3. Goals Increase Satisfaction

When you accomplish a goal in your personal or professional life, it usually is accompanied by feelings of pride and satisfaction.

This is valuable for so many reasons. You feel happier in general and have more self-confidence, each which contributes to positive mental health.

In a world with many stresses and pressures, this is a great way for you to not only reduce stress but also create opportunities for positive reinforcement and self satisfaction.

4. Goals Increase Productivity

As your motivation and confidence build, so will your productivity! You are less distracted and more focused, and as a result you get more done in less time.

You begin to work and live proactively instead of re-actively, actively engaging in your work and striving to achieve your goals.

5. Goals Create Motivation

As your productivity grows and you begin to successfully reach your goals, your motivation increases as well.

Without goals, motivation can be hard to come by. It is easy to drift from one project to another, never finishing any of them or experiencing the tangible gratification of completing a task that you know is moving you towards a specific goal.

Once you define goals and the steps to accomplish them, tangible satisfaction increases as well as drive and motivation to do more.

6. Goals Keep You Accountable

We all know how easy it is to become distracted and veer off-task. Having defined goals split into achievable tasks keeps you accountable.

When you periodically review your progress, you can identify trouble areas or tasks that did not go as planned. This information is valuable and can be used to avoid similar problems when setting goals and defining tasks in the future.

How To Set Effective And Achievable Goals

“A good system shortens the road to the goal”

 – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Recognizing the value of setting goals is the first step to achieving them.

The next is learning how to set goals that are both effective and achievable. If a goal is too vague, unmeasurable, or unrealistic, the benefits of goal-setting are lost.

The best way to do this is to set S.M.A.R.T. goals, which are goals that are

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Timely

I have an article that walks you step-by-step through the S.M.A.R.T. goal setting process to ensure that you set effective goals – be sure to read it before setting your goals for the new year!
